Bardia National Park is located in Nepal’s western plain lands, east of the Karnali River, covering an area of 968 sq.km. Initially, a small area was gazetted as the Karnali Wildlife Reserve in 1976. In 1982, it was renamed as Bardia Wildlife Reserve, and in 1984 it was extended to its current size. The reserve was given the status of a National Park in 1988. Greater One-horned Rhinoceros were translocated from Chitwan National Park in 1986, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.

In 1997, an area of 327 sq.km. surrounding the park was declared as a buffer zone, which consists of forests anJungle safari, Bardiya National Park, Chitawan National Park, Koshi Tappu wild life reserve, hunting area, National Parks, Wildlife Reserve and Conservation Areasd private lands. The park and local communities jointly manage the buffer zone. Together they initiate community development activities and manage natural resources in the buffer zones. Now, it is the largest and most undisturbed protected area in the Terai, home to many endangered species including tiger, wild elephant, rhinoceros, swamp deer, blackbuck, gharial crocodile, marsh mugger crocodile and Gangetic dolphin. The enchanting birds found here are Bengal florican, lesser florican, Silver-eared mesia and Sarus Crane. The national park is full of open grasslands and glades, making it an ideal place for game-viewing.
