In Nepal birthdays are celebrated with own traditional rituals according to the Lunar Calendar.
Birthday boy or girl wakes up early in the morning and go to the temple for worshiping. After coming back from temple birthday boy or girl/men/women is offered boiled egg, alcohol, small smoked fish as sagun (सगं / sagah) by the eldest female member of the family and blessing by the eldest in the family. It signifies as the sign for good health and well being. But this tradition is not same in all communites. There are also vegetrian communities in Nepal. People also offer beaten rice with curd, til to their neighbors kids or to kids playing or passing by in front of the house. This is how a typical Newar BIRTHDAY is celebrated. Cutting cakes and wishing “happy birthday to you” is not in out culture but these days people as follow western culture of cutting cakes as a fun.

Here, birthday means Janmadin which is pronounced as jan-ma-din. Subhakamana means well wishes and it can be pronounced as su-bha-ka-ma-na.

Janmadinakō śubhakāmana ama. Similarly, you can add meri ama lai jan-ma-din-ko su-bha-ka-ma-na as we did above for whishing father but there is difference. For father we use mero whereas for mother we use meri, both means same that is my. If you’re wishing to male then you can say mero and for female meri (me-ri मेरी).

Ama (ama आमा) means mother in Nepali language. People also say mata but mata is normally said to goddess
