History of Chitlang

Chitlang is the ancient Newar settlement and has a rich Newar culture where Jatra and festivals are celebrated throughout the year. Puja was collected from Chitlang village during Rato Machhendra Nath Jatra which is celebrated in Lalitpur.

Chitlang was the only way to connect to India before the Tribhuvan Rajpath highway was built to connect Kathmandu. The old stone-paved trading route called “Chitlang Marga”, which is over 2,000 years old is one of the most famous historical landmarks in Chitlang. This route is used by traders for importing and exporting products between the two countries. The same route was used to bring the first car to Kathmandu by carrying it by a group of men.

During the time of the unification of Nepal, King Prithvi Narayan Shah marched through Chitlang.

Mahakabi Laxmi Prasad Devkota wrote a poem called “Yatri” while he was in Chitlang and was inspired by his surroundings. He spent some time in Chitlang.

Chandra Shumsher’s Building

This house is a temporary residence of VIPs of Nepal while traveling outside of Kathmandu. They used to travel to different parts of southern Nepal and India.

Ashok Chaitya

There is the temple known as Ashoka Chaitya built in memory of his visit to Chitlang while he was on the way from Tibet to India. It was built by emperor Asoka of Magadh (current India).

The name “Saatdhara” is derived from the 7 stone taps. According to the legend, this is the place where Ganesh, Shiva, Krishna, and Saraswoti were located. It is a religious site of this place where people worship the goddess Saraswati on the occasion of Basanta Panchami. It is surrounded by a forest.

How to reach Chitlang?

Distance from Kathmandu to Chitlang is 28 kilometers but there are other routes also. There is a route from Kathmandu to Chitlang via Chandragiri Hill (after hiking downhill) and another is from Kathmandu to Chitlang via Godam.
