First Indian woman to climb Mount Everest

Bachendri Pal was the First Indian woman to climb Mount Everest on 23 May 1984, one day before her 30th birthday. She was born on 24 May 1954 in Nakuri, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. She was one of five children born into a rural working-class family. Her father’s name is Shri Kishan Singh Pal and her mother is Hansa Devi. She completed her B.Ed. and M.A. from D.A.V. Post Graduate College in Dehradun, India.

She started mountaineering at the age of 12 and became a professional mountaineer rather than a school teacher. She is the first female to climb Mt. Rudragaria 5,818.9 m (19,091 ft) and Mt. Gangotri 7,138.1 m (23,419 ft). Pal was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. It is the third-highest civilian award.
