In Nepal, birthdays are celebrated with their traditional rituals according to the Lunar Calendar. The birthday boy or girl wakes up early in the morning and goes to the temple for worship. After coming back from the temple birthday boy or girl/man/woman is offered a boiled egg, alcohol, and small smoked fish as sagun (सगं / sagah) by the eldest female member of the family and blessed by the eldest in the family.
It signifies the sign of good health and well-being. But this tradition is not the same in all communities. There are also vegetarian communities in Nepal. People also offer beaten rice with curd, to their neighbor’s kids or kids playing or passing by in front of the house. This is how a typical Newar BIRTHDAY is celebrated. Cutting cakes and wishing “Happy Birthday to you” is not in our culture but these days people follow the western culture of cutting cakes as fun.
